The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issues statement to mark Nayrouz (Coptic New Year)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

OTTAWA, ON – The Hon. Erin O’Toole, Leader of Canada’s Conservatives and of the Official Opposition, issued the following statement on Nayrouz:

“Today, Christian Copts in Canada and across the world celebrate Nayrouz, the Coptic New Year.

“This celebration marks the first day of the Coptic month of Thout, and commemorates the countless number of Coptic martyrs who sacrificed their lives to preserve their faith.

“While this year’s festivities will look different because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I hope you will be able to celebrate the numerous achievements of the Coptic Christians with your family and friends.

“While many Copts in Canada will mark this occasion peacefully and without fear for their lives, we must not forget about those who continue to face prejudice and persecution in the Middle East and throughout the world. May it serve as a reminder of the importance of freedom of conscience, speech and expression we all enjoy here in Canada.

“Canada’s Conservatives will always support religious pluralism and stand up for everyone’s fundamental rights at home and abroad.

“On behalf of Canada’s Conservatives, I would like to extend my warmest wishes to all Coptic Christians celebrating Nayrouz!”
